How to Make Smashed Potato Pizza

Cook Your Potato

Start by cooking your potato. I like to cook it in the microwave for convenience, but you can also bake your potato. If using the microwave, stab your potato with a fork all over about 20 times, then place it on a plate and pop it in the microwave for 8 minutes, flipping halfway through. You’ll know it is completely cooked when you can stab it all the way through with a fork.

Cook Potato

Prepare Pizza Crust

Heat your olive oil in a pan, and then place your potato in the middle of the pan. Place a piece of parchment on top, then use a large plate to press the potato down to make a pizza crust. Use a spatula to smooth out the edges.

Recipe Tips for Smashed Potato Pizza

Avoid Overcooking – Cook your potatoes until fork tender in the first step. Over-cooking will make them too soft, and they won’t hold their shape when smashed.

Choose the Right Potatoes – Opt for a starchy potato variety like russet potatoes for the best results. Their high starch content creates a crispy crust when smashed and cooked.

Don’t Skimp on Oil – Use enough olive oil when cooking the potato crust to ensure it gets crispy and golden brown. The oil also adds flavor and prevents sticking.

Customize Your Toppings – Get creative with your toppings! Experiment with different combinations of sauces, cheeses, vegetables, and proteins to create your own unique flavor profiles.

Watch the Heat – Keep an eye on the heat while baking the potato crust to avoid burning. Cooking over low-medium heat allows the crust to brown evenly without over-browning.
